Homoeopathy is a complete system of medicine developed by German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) based on the principle of “like cures likes”, which was known by the Romans, Greeks and Chinese but never developed by them into a system.

Hahnemann found that many substances when administered to healthy people could produce symptoms similar to those experienced by sick people.

He also found that illnesses could be cured by using small specially prepared doses of these substances, if prescribed on the basis of similarity of symptoms. An example is a case of viral meningitis in a child; the typical symptoms are restlessness, flushed face, dilated pupils etc. If a person were to eat the belladonna berry they would experience symptoms similar to the viral meningitis therefore a small properly prepared dose of Belladonna would be given to the sick child, thus the Belladonna would cancel out the effect of the virus.

Homoeopathy is used worldwide and acknowledged by the World Health Organisation as a valid form of health care. Homoeopathy can be used for First Aid and acute or chronic diseases.

Conventional medicine is based primarily on the concept that diseases are caused by harmful organisms or poisons. Treatment is aimed to either kill these organisms or oppose any harmful effects of the poison. Homoeopathy aims to strengthen the body so that the body can act by itself to defeat the organism or the poison.

In the initial consultation the Homoeopath will ask about the presenting problem as well as looking at any other conditions and the character/emotional state of the person. And then prescribe a Homoeopathic medicine based on the symptom picture.
